For Neat Quit v1.4.1 · macOS 13 or later

If you run into a problem while installing, granting permission, uninstalling or using the app, start with the steps below. If that does not solve it, open a GitHub issue with the details listed at the end.

1. Install

  1. Download the current DMG from the product page, or use the backup entry in the changelog.
  2. Open the DMG from your Downloads folder and drag Neat Quit.app into Applications.
  3. Launch Neat Quit from Applications. On first launch, macOS may ask you to confirm the source; the installer is Developer ID signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens normally.
  4. The app appears in the menu bar. If macOS hides the icon, check System Settings → Control Center → Menu Bar.

The installer requires macOS 13 or later. To verify your download, run shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/NeatQuit-v1.4.1.dmg and compare it with the value on the product page.

2. First permission

The red-button feature needs Accessibility permission:

  1. After first launch, click the Neat Quit icon in the menu bar and choose “Enable Neat Quit”.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility when prompted.
  3. Find “Neat Quit” and turn it on. If it is not listed, click “+” and add it from Applications.
  4. Return to the app; once it detects the permission it restarts automatically and starts working.

If you also want “⌘W smart quit”, enable it separately in the menu. It is off by default and macOS may ask for Input Monitoring; the red-button feature keeps working even if keyboard monitoring cannot start.

3. Purchase and licence

The free version includes red-button auto quit, launch at login and the menu bar toggle. Neat Quit Pro unlocks ⌘W smart quit and the exception apps list. New users get a 7-day full-feature trial on first launch.

  1. Click “Buy Pro” in the Pricing section of the product page, or open “License…” from the menu bar and choose “Continue to Purchase”.
  2. After payment, your licence key appears on the order page and is emailed to the address you used.
  3. Open “License…” from the menu bar, paste the key and click Activate.
  4. Each licence activates up to 3 Macs. Deactivate an old Mac before moving to a new one.

Users who used ⌘W, the exception list or the main toggle on 1.3.6 or earlier keep Pro after upgrading, with no repurchase needed.

4. Refunds and switching Macs

Payment, tax and refunds are handled by Creem as the merchant of record. You can request a full refund within 14 days of purchase, no questions asked; see the Refund Policy. Email yinzhenyu.su@gmail.com with your order ID (ORD-…) or purchase email. Creem processes the refund and the licence is disabled once it completes.

When moving to a new Mac, click “Deactivate” in the “License…” window on the old Mac, then activate the same key on the new one. If you cannot find the key, check your purchase email or the Creem customer portal link it contains.

5. Revoke access

Turn off “Neat Quit” in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility to revoke access. To remove it completely, select the entry and click “−”. If you enabled ⌘W, do the same under Input Monitoring.

After revoking, the app stops listening for windows and shortcuts, and the related menu items become unavailable. Grant access again to re-enable it.

6. Uninstall

  1. Open Neat Quit from the menu bar and choose “Quit”.
  2. Open Applications, drag “Neat Quit.app” to the Trash and empty it.
  3. If you enabled launch at login, remove “Neat Quit” from System Settings → General → Login Items.
  4. To remove preferences, run defaults delete com.yinzhenyu.smartclose in Terminal.

7. Troubleshooting

The app does not quit after I click the red button

  • Confirm “Enable Neat Quit” is on and Accessibility permission has been granted.
  • The app may still have more than one standard window; Neat Quit only quits when the last standard window closes.
  • Check whether the app is in the exceptions list; exception apps only close their window.
  • Apps with incomplete accessibility information keep the system's default behavior.

⌘W smart quit does nothing

  • The feature is off by default; enable it in the menu.
  • If macOS asks for Input Monitoring, allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring.
  • Regular browser tabs, blocked closes or unreadable window information never trigger an extra quit.

The app stays in the Dock

  • The target app may be showing an unsaved-document prompt and waiting for your choice.
  • The app may have declined the quit request; Neat Quit never force-quits processes.

Update check fails

  • Make sure the network can reach https://app.bgm.fun/appcast.xml.
  • Check manually from “About Neat Quit”, or download the latest DMG from the changelog and install it over the current version.

The app will not open

  • Confirm the system is macOS 13 or later.
  • Download again from the official site or GitHub Release; avoid copies from unknown sources.
  • If macOS warns about the source, allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security, or re-download the signed and notarized installer.

It does not start at login

  • Confirm “Launch at login” is on in the menu.
  • Confirm “Neat Quit” is allowed in System Settings → General → Login Items.
